Origin and History of Jumilla Wines

To speak of Jumilla is undoubtedly to speak of its winemaking history, this tradition dates back to the first centuries of our Era.

During the Roman domination in Jumilla continued with the cultivation of vines but with the arrival of the Arab invasion many vineyards were destroyed and vines were harvested but for the production of syrup and as fruit.

With the arrival of the Middle Ages, vine cultivation continued and wines were produced but only for internal use. Then in the XVII century the cultivation was increasing and everything seems to indicate that in the town of Jumilla the payment of tithe for wine was given. By the end of the 19th century Jumilla went through its golden age despite the fact that the lands were devastated by the Phylloxera plague, however, it was necessary to transform its winemaking methods.

At the beginning of the 20th century, France managed to overcome the problems caused by the plague and the attack of the Phylloxera reduced the production of wines in Jumilla.

In 1950 there was a resurgence of the wine sector and the first automated bottling plants were installed, so that trade became more important and by 1966 the Denomination of Origin of the wines of Jumilla was created.

Its climate and soil characteristics make its territory an ideal place for the harvest of the vines with which they produce their wines, strains such as Monastrell, which is the traditional of the area, manage to give wines full of flavor and quality.
