Origin and History of Canary Island Wines

The Canary Islands were conquered by Europeans during the 15th century. The remoteness and the rough and rugged terrain meant that the conquest took the whole century, but on their arrival the conquerors found a population in the middle of the Bronze Age.

It was the Europeans who brought the vines and according to history the first vineyard planted in Tenerife was at the hands of the Portuguese Fernando de Castro, in 1497, and then the Englishman John Hill planted the first vineyard in El Hierro in 1526. With the decline of sugar cane cultivation, Canary Island wines began to be exported, especially Malvasia, a luxury product that was served at the tables of the main European monarchies, bourgeois and noblemen of Europe and Latin America, and masters of literature of the time such as Shakespeare, Daniel Defoe, Góngora and Sir Walter Scott, who mentioned this delicious wine in their works.

The English tried to monopolize the trade of Canary Island wines during the 17th century, so wine production was compromised, in addition to suffering from devastating plagues of powdery mildew and mildew that managed to compromise their vineyards.

By the 20th century, Canary Island wines were produced for local consumption and in 1985 the Tacoronte-Acentejo Denomination of Origin was created, in an attempt to regulate wine production and increase quality, which led to the creation of several other Denominations of Origin within a few years, not only in Tenerife but in all the islands of the archipelago, thus achieving recognition for their wines.
