Origin and History of Alicante Wines

Everything seems to indicate that it was the Phoenicians who introduced the first vines in the province of Alicante, and that the Romans were the great growers, however, history points to the Iberian people as the first vine growers in the province of Alicante.

It is in the 15th century when Alicante Wines are documented in history. It was during the Renaissance, under the rule of Ferdinand the Catholic that wines from other territories were forbidden to enter the lands of Alicante. Alicante wine had the Royal Denomination, and was the wine of cardinals in the Renaissance, of princes of literature and kings of France, as well as the first wine that went around the world, accompanying Juan Sebastian Elcano in his voyages.

They have also been present in literature under the letters of Alexander Dumas, Emilio Salgari and Quinet, among other famous writers, who have referred to the wines of Alicante in some of his works. In 1932 the Alicante Denomination of Origin was created, thus constituting its first Regulatory Council in 1957.

With this step, work was done to organize the sector in order to improve quality, bottling and processing, adapting methods to reach the consumer more effectively.
