Origin and history of Chilean wines

The first vines planted in Chile were brought in the mid-1550s by missionaries from Spain, who wanted to produce table wines for their Eucharistic celebrations. These Spanish varietals produced Chilean wines for several centuries.

Producers used primitive techniques to produce rustic wines, then in the 19th century Chile became independent from Spanish laws and the privileged Chilean classes began to travel to Europe, where they were able to appreciate French wines.

Production of quality wines

With the beginning of the importation of the varietals of the great Bordeaux wines, Chileans discovered that they could produce a better class of wines, thus beginning the modern era in production. By the 80’s half of the vineyards were destroyed due to the political moment that Chile lived, but after this debacle, international producers wanted to invest in Chilean agriculture.

Thanks to its favorable climate, it attracted the interest of companies from France, the United States, Spain and Japan. These new companies invested in modern technologies, revitalizing and replanting the vineyards, achieving a surprising result in which Chile was transformed from one day to the next into the world’s wine capital thanks to its cost-benefit ratio.

Today Chile is recognized as one of the most important wine producing countries in the southern hemisphere, thanks to its climate that provides unique vines that generate good wines.
