Origin and History of the Wines of Madrid

The first documents that prove the existence of vineyards and wine in Madrid date back to the 12th century, so everything seems to indicate that the first vineyards were planted in the region during the Roman conquest.

For many centuries vineyards were the most important crop after cereals, and the creation of Madrid as the capital of Spain boosted the boom in some areas, which led to the disappearance of orchards in the areas of Antón Martín and Santo Domingo. San Martín de Valdeiglesias was a pioneer in the export of its wines to Segovia and Avila. Until well into the 19th century, the wines of this region were the favorites of the people of Madrid.

From 1980 onwards, farmers began to organize themselves to recover the wines and the regional administration strongly supported the work that culminated in 1990 with the creation of the Denomination of Origin Wines of Madrid.

Thanks to the work carried out during these thirty years, the wines of madrid have achieved wide recognition for their quality, which has been endorsed with national and international distinctions and an increase in exports.
