Origin and History of French wine

It is estimated that around 600 B.C. the Greeks, inhabitants of Lydia, fleeing from the Persian invasion, settled in Corsica and founded Massalia, controlling the river routes of the Rhone, the Saône, the Seine and the Loire.

Massalia produced its own wine, as well as amphorae for export, then became part of the Roman Empire in 125 BC.

The Romans moved up the Rhone valley and later in Caesar’s reign they moved westward to the Bordeaux region.
